New vaccine could help with pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer is one of thedeadliest cancers of all. The location of the organ, wedged tightly between the stomach and spine, makes detectiondifficult and surgery often impossible once a tumor is discovered. Every year, approximately 33,000 new cases arediagnosed in the United States; of that number, a staggering 32,000 people will die from the disease. To combat such ahigh mortality rate, researchers at the University of South Florida are hoping to design a vaccine that willstimulate the patient’s immune system to kill tumors. Vaccines, a novel approach to the eradication of cancers, arebecoming more popular in the research field. Currently the National Cancer Institute is funding over 290 researchprojects involving vaccines. Traditional vaccines contain weakened or dead cells of a disease that prompt the body toproduce antibodies to protect against the disease. Cancer vaccines are a departure from the traditional approach inthat they are administered to patients who already have the disease, the aim of the injections being to kill thetumors.
The Tampa research team is hoping to locate 35 patients whose pancreatic cancer is too advanced forsurgery. That group will be given the injections, a tricky process in which a needle passes through the stomach andpart of the liver. The hope is that the vaccine will trigger the immune system into attacking the cancer cells. If itis a success, the futures of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will look much brighter.
